Amazon is helping fund the redevelopment of a Virginia Square property as part of the affordable housing contributions it is making as it builds out its second headquarters in Arlington County.

The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing announced Thursday Amazon gifted $1M for the redevelopment of the American Legion site at 3445 Washington Blvd. into 160 affordable apartments.

APAH acquired the 1.3-acre site from the American Legion in 2016. The redevelopment, branded as Lucille and Bruce Terwilliger Place, will include units ranging from one to three bedrooms and will give priority to veterans for half of the units. The building's first floor space is planned to include a new home for American Legion Post 139.

The gift is part of a $3M donation Amazon announced in June to the Arlington Community Foundation, which granted the money to APAH for the project. Amazon is also committing to donate $20M toward Arlington's Affordable Housing Investment Fund as part of a zoning package that will be voted on next week, ARLnow reports.

“We are so honored that the Foundation and Amazon chose APAH for the initial gift. This contribution will go a long way in making this special project even more impactful," APAH President and CEO Nina Janopaul said in a release. “Thanks to today’s gifts we can increase the number of Terwilliger Place homes that will be affordable for those living in the lowest income bracket — families living on minimum wage.”
