Toronto’s iconic Sam The Record Man sign will return to the downtown skyline this fall.
The sign — first erected in 1959 — is made up of two enormous spinning neon discs on a red background. The sign was a familiar sight near the city's busy Yonge-Dundas Square, flashing above the record store owned by music icon Sam Sniderman.
Sniderman's entire store received heritage status from Toronto in 2007 to preserve the cultural value of the signs. The store closed that year and the property was bought by Ryerson University.
Ryerson had initially intended to place the sign over a student centre built on the old site. Instead, the sign will shine over 277 Victoria, overlooking Yonge-Dundas Square.
The university said restoration by Sunset Neon began in June with an installation date set for this fall, according to Ryerson Today.
