The California College of Arts is the latest school to make plans for student housing as demand grows and San Francisco's rents continue to rise.

The school has filed preliminary plans to tear down an industrial building at 188 Hooper St and build a five-story building with up to 600 beds near its San Francisco campus. The new building also would include retail, PDR space and parking, according to the San Francisco Business Times. The school bought the property in 2008 for $6M.

Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects is designing the project, expected to be ready for students by 2019. The developer is Art Group, a JV of UrbanGreen Devco and Capstone Development. The search for affordable housing drove UCSF and UC Hastings to plan shared housing on the UC Hastings campus. UCSF also bought three properties in Dogpatch last year for student housing, and SF State wants new student and faculty housing on Holloway Avenue. [SFBT]
