Four Bay Area city mayors say they want more manufacturing in their cities. The mayors of San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont helped kick off the Bay Area Summit on Urban Manufacturing last week organized by SFMade. These cities have over 100,000 factory jobs within 3,200 companies, reports the Mercury News.
One core idea of the shared initiative is the four cities will work together instead of competitively to create a more interconnected community.
SFMade CEO Kate Sofis told the Mercury News the Bay Area is a “leading innovator in the manufacturing revolution.”
San Jose is leading the way with 65,000 manufacturing jobs and plenty of land to expand manufacturing. Fremont offers 26,000 jobs, while Oakland has 10,000 jobs and San Francisco offers 7,500 jobs.
Tesla in Fremont continues to be the largest manufacturer in California with 6,000 jobs and has plans to expand. German auto manufacturer SAS also just committed to 142k SF in Newark.
While the Bay Area competes with other manufacturing hubs like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and North Carolina, the region benefits from being a center of innovation and already attracts the apparel, food and beverage, metalworking and electronics industries. [MN]
