Massive Power Outage Hits San Francisco

UPDATE 8:53 p.m.: Power was restored to all but 3,000 customers by 4 p.m. and was restored to all customers by 5 p.m., the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

UPDATE 2:20 p.m.: PG&E said a circuit breaker failed at the Larkin Street substation causing a fire that led to the power outage. Power should be restored to the remaining 30,000 customers by 5 p.m., reports KRON4.

UPDATE: 1:10 p.m.: PG&E's outage map now says power is expected to be restored by 2:15 p.m. About 67,000 customers are still without power.

UPDATE 12:15 p.m.: PG&E spokesperson Andrea Menniti said power has been restored to 10,000 customers and a remaining 78,000 customers are still without power. A fire was reported in the Larkin Street substation.

UPDATE: PG&E is now saying power may be restored to most customers by 1 p.m.

A massive power outage hit downtown San Francisco this morning. The lights went out from the Financial District to the Presidio, closing down businesses, a federal courthouse and the Montgomery BART station, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. About 90,000 customers lost power during the outage, which started at 9 a.m.

Traffic lights were reported out and backed up traffic on several streets in downtown. PG&E is working on the cause of the outage. Estimated restoration is noon, according to PG&E’s website.

The San Francisco Fire Department reported no injuries.
