SCOUTS’ HONOR

When a little old lady needs to cross the street, who you gonna call? That’s right, the Boy Scouts. (You'd think after all these years little old ladies would learn how to cross the street themselves.) And to show its support for the Scouts, the Real Estate 100 recently helped put on the Boy Scouts Gala dinner, a fundraiser for the San Francisco Bay Area Council.
Eastdil Secured CEO Roy March presented the 2011 Good Scout Award to senior managing director Jeff Weber, who runs the San Fran office. The award goes to an individual who promotes Scout values such as service to community and is a good role model for young people. As a kid, Jeff was a member of a Cub Scout pack inSanta Cruz. He tells us the market continues to have positive fundamentals, and his office looks to have a very active finish to the year. Its most recent closing: a $100M portfolio of San Francisco office buildings.
GLL Development & Management president David Wall organized the event. Like the Scouts’ motto, the real estate community wasprepared to party for a good cause. He tells us close to 300 people turned out; the event raised $300k for the Bay Area Council. (If that were popcorn, the line of decorative tins would stretch to the moon and back). David was a Cub Scout in a West LA pack. Today, he’s earning merit badges readying GLL’s 350 Mission, a 27-story, 356k SF office tower catty-corner to the Transbay Terminal. The project has been fully entitled as of February, and construction drawings should be completed by year-end.
Proceeds help fund Boy Scout programs such as week-long summer camp. David tells us the Bay Area Council serves more than 30,000Scouts, many of whom come from underprivileged families in tough, inner-city neighborhoods. The Real Estate 100’s support is “our way to get them out of the streets” and learn the good things about scouting. Indeed, a number of Scouts shared their stories of how scouting changed their lives.
The entire Weber family, including Mom and Dad, came out to see Jeff get his props. The Real Estate 100, a Who’s Who of Bay Area real estate pros, started a year ago (when the Boy Scouts of America marked its 100th anniversary). Others who attended the bash included Shorenstein president Glenn Shannon, Webcor CEO Andy Ball, sustainable energy innovator Kevin Best, Allen Matkins partnerRick Mallory, Fremont Group CFO Rick Kopf, and real estate media counsel, Gala vice chair and Real Estate 100 co-founder Tim Gallen.
