Locally based Pacific Building Group, a general contractor with expertise in corporate and life sciences projects, has completed major tenant improvements on General Atomics' 273,436 SF headquarters in Rancho Bernardo. General Atomics is a San Diego-based defense contractor specializing in advanced electromagnetic and electric power generation technologies, drone development and radar solutions.

General Atomics wanted to improve office connectivity and communication and building aesthetics, and improve security access and data and storage capabilities. The overhaul provided extensive data and audio-visual upgrades, along with a complete building makeover that included new flooring, millwork, paint and other first-class finishes. Upgrades included new security entrances throughout the building and construction of a 2k SF concrete storage locker. Pictured is the upgraded R&D/lab space.

PBG staged work to allow General Atomics to remain operational throughout the construction process, says PBG associate project manager Frank Torres. “We were challenged with meeting aggressive time schedules to help General Atomics successfully transition more than 1,000 employees into the improved office and lab space,” he said.

The PBG project team included Torres, senior project manager Mike Slaven, superintendents Mike Smith and Jim Entwisle, and project coordinator Cindy Jones. Carrier Johnson served as the architect on the project.
