The first 14.3-acre phase of Mission Valley’s long-awaited $20M Civita Park has opened. A brownfield quarry site a decade ago, the new park now is a gathering place for the Mission Valley community, where Civita developer Sudberry Properties plans to provide programming, such as concerts, and other events, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The park, the centerpiece of Civita, features a Cloud Amphitheater stage; a series of trails sporting lifelike bronze rabbits, two cats and a French bulldog named Dumpling; and sports fields and basketball courts. There is also a community garden with 38 plots, which will be doled out to backyard gardeners; a waterfall and man-made creek; picnic tables and “outdoor living rooms” shaded by wisteria-covered trellises; a game area; and a military tribute plaza.

The next phases of the park, scheduled to open in 2018, will include rock and climbing walls; a recreation center; two playgrounds with shade structures; more fields; a bocce court; the “Mining Relic Terrace” with historic mining equipment and a Caterpillar D8 bulldozer; and three gardens. A 10K SF museum dedicated to Mission Valley history will open in 2020. When completed, Civita will include approximately 60 acres of open space, cultivated landscape and public parks.
