UCSD Will Break Ground In 2018 On $608M, Transit-Oriented, Mixed-Use Complex On West Campus

Ucsd Will Break Ground Next Year On The North Torrey Pines Living & Learning Neighborhood.

UC San Diego will break ground next year on a $608M, seven-building mixed-use complex called the North Torrey Pines Living & Learning Neighborhood. The complex will provide a new home for 6th College, a technology-oriented college with about 4,300 students; housing for 2,000 students; and new academic space for the divisions of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities, according to the UCSD News Center. Completion is projected for 2020.

Designed by a team of HKS Architects and Safdie Rabines Architects, this LEED Platinum-designed project will encompass nearly 1M SF of classrooms, student housing, commercial space and cultural programming. Occupying 10 acres on UCSD’s West Campus, between Muir and Marshall Colleges, it is part of UCSD’s expansion plan to accommodate increasing enrollment, which is projected to approach 40,000 students over the next five years.

The transit-oriented project, which is along an extension of the MTS Trolley to La Jolla, will connect West Campus students to transit. It also realigns Scholars Drive and makes improvements to Ridge Walk along the eastern edge of the neighborhood to enhance movement of people and bikes through the campus core. The design features various gathering places for students to socialize and relax, pedestrian and bike-friendly pathways, underground parking for 1,200 cars and a market, dining hall and craft center.
