Federal housing authorities have reached an agreement with Orange County landlords after a mother and daughter who live in Laguna Niguel's Alicia Park Apartments complained of discrimination due to their disabilities.

The two women filed a complaint on June 14 with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, stating they were discriminated against after asking to be moved to an apartment with no carpet, saying their unit was mold-infested and had a couple of ruptured pipes.

The mother has a mobility impairment and her daughter has a respiratory disability, the Orange County Register reports.

They had also requested to have an accessible parking space next to their apartment.

Both requests were denied.

As part of the agreement, the apartment's management company will sign the residents to a one-year lease, give them the parking space and pay them $17,500.

The company will also replace the carpet with new floors and rid the apartment of mold.

Staff on the property will be trained in fair housing policies. [OCR]
