A proposed 150-acre master-planned development on the site of the Los Alamitos Race Course will now be in the hands of the voters in the city of Cypress.

The Cypress City Council will hold a special municipal election June 5 for the rezoning of the Los Alamitos Race Course into a master-planned community that consists of senior and single-family housing, retail, restaurants, a town center and a couple of parks.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters notified the city that it has received the necessary number of signatures to include the measure on the June ballot. Under the city’s Measure D, any zoning changes to public and semi-public areas, including the racetrack, require voter approval.

The Los Alamitos Race Course, which is home to Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome, is in no immediate danger of closing anytime soon.

Owner Dr. Ed Allred, who is in his 80s, has previously said because of the declining state and popularity of horse racing, he does not expect anyone to take over for him to keep the operation alive. He said the racetrack probably will stay open for another eight to 10 years.

Allred and his backers introduced a similar ballot measure to rezone the property in 2016 but it lost by 2%. The new proposed ballot measure capped the height of commercial buildings and added more green space.
