Getting More Fashionable: Irvine Co. Renames Island Hotel

The Island Hotel is getting into the fashion scene.

Owner and operator Irvine Co. has renamed the Island Hotel Newport Beach at 690 Newport Center Drive to Fashion Island Hotel, the company announced earlier this month.

The rebranding is part of an effort to connect the hotel to the company’s popular luxury Fashion Island outdoor mall, and caps off an 18-month renovation of the hotel.

“Adding ‘fashion’ to the hotel name bolsters the alignment between these two important properties, while emphasizing Fashion Island as an iconic and luxury destination,” Irvine Co. Resort Properties President Ralph Grippo said in a statement.

The Fashion Island mall celebrated its 50th birthday earlier this year.

The Irvine Co. developed 295-room Island Hotel Newport Beach in 1986. It began managing the hotel in 2005. The company has spent the past year and a half renovating the property, including a redesigned poolside bar next to an updated resort-style pool, a new 2,100 SF restaurant and a refurbished fitness center.

“The properties have always complemented one another and now that they are more closely aligned, both help complete the culture of the Fashion Island area,” Fashion Island Hotel General Manager Gerard Widder said.
