The Cypress City Council will discuss the future of a 13-acre site in front of the Los Alamitos Race Course, a development that could anchor the area in decades to come.
The city council will hold a workshop Monday night weighing the pitches from developers Shea Properties and a JV of Lewis Land Developers and Province Group, which are competing to purchase and develop the city-owned property on Katella Avenue and Winners Circle Drive.
With the 155-acre Los Alamitos Race Course recently changing its land zoning, the city's 13-acre site has become an attractive piece of property that could anchor future development planned to replace the racetrack.
As the horse-racing industry continues to struggle, the owner of the Los Alamitos Race Course has already made it known that the racetrack is in its final stretch — possibly 10 more years.
The new zoning for the racetrack will allow a mix of 1,200 residential units, a town center with restaurants, shops and entertainment and office buildings.
Shea Properties has previously bid on the city's 13-acre site, proposing to develop a 100-room hotel, a grocery store and restaurants. But the city held off on making any final decisions.
