Go West, TOD Designer

These may be hard times for California, but that doesn't mean that the rest of the country has quit looking to the state for opportunity. In previous years, most of the Atlanta-based architecture firm Cooper Carry's work was in the East, but it opened an office in Newport Beach in the mid-2000s and established itself as an active designer of TOD plans for SoCal, such as Heritage Fields in Irvine (pictured). The plan’s core design focuses on transit connectivity via a series of strategically spaced development zones, each within a five-minute walk of a transit station. Cooper Carry has recommended mixed-use zoning for the TOD to help limit traffic and promote quality density through mixed-use development.
TOD is something California badly needs, Cooper Carry CEO Kevin Cantley tells us (the firm also did a TOD plan for Anaheim, pictured, and one for San Bernardino as well): "Southern California is really a blank place on the map when it comes to transit-oriented developments. There's no place in the country, and maybe in the world , that's so automobile dependent. We have a mission to take the TOD expertise we've developed in Washington, New York, and Atlanta and apply it to the opportunities that are emerging out in southern California."
