Anaheim Approves $52M Affordable Housing Project

The Anaheim City Council has approved a $52M affordable housing project that council members say will provide much-needed housing for low-wage workers in the city's thriving resort district and Platinum Triangle neighborhoods.

The council on Jan. 29 unanimously voted in favor of nonprofit developer Jamboree Housing's proposed 102-unit affordable housing development on a 2.86-acre lot at 2121 South Manchester Ave. and 915 East Orangewood Ave., about a mile from Angel Stadium and Disneyland Resort.

Upon completion sometime in 2021, the yet-to-be-named development will be the city's 14th affordable housing project, according to city staff. This will be Jamboree's seventh affordable housing project in the city.

Jamboree, a nonprofit based in Irvine, is proposing to build a four-story, contemporary-styled, 102-unit affordable housing development with a rooftop deck, a swimming pool, a community garden, a children's play area and a 213-spot, three-story parking structure on city-owned land.

The city is giving the vacant site — valued at as much as $10M — as part of the agreement with Jamboree to develop the land for affordable housing.

Anaheim has a backlog of more than 20,000 residents on a waiting list to rent an affordable housing unit, according to city staff.

Jamboree's project will cater to those residents that fall within the extremely low, very-low and low-income household categories or who are earning around a combined $32,800 to $87,450 a year for a family of four. Twenty percent of the units will be for homeless households, according to the staff report.

Councilman Jose Moreno said the new project will provide much-needed workforce housing to people who work in the hospitality or service sector in the city's resort district anchored by Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center.

"This shows that Anaheim is open to low-income, medium-income and providing affordable housing in the city," Mayor Harry Sidhu said. "This is a great project and we hope there is more to come."
