The Metropolitan Museum of Art is planning a new design for its modern art wing.

British architect Sir David Chipperfield is developing a new design for a Southwest Wing, an assignment that could expand into other galleries and operational spaces, the New York Post reports. The project is slated to cover 180k SF of the more than 2M SF museum.

“It will be no higher than the existing buildings that are there. It goes down and up to a rooftop with a terrace,” Daniel Brodsky, the developer who also serves as chairman of the Met’s board, told the Post. A rooftop terrace should be a popular addition as the current terrace at The Met has been a big hit with guests.

As a building with landmark status for its exterior and some of its interior, approval from NYC’s Landmarks Preservation Commission is needed for any proposed changes. The Met’s footprint in Central Park will not expand as a result of the project, which will certainly appease New Yorkers who were upset about the nearby American Museum of Natural History’s expansion into Theodore Roosevelt Park. [NYP]
