A Rendering Of The Office Propety Thor Planned For Red Hook

The Atlantic Basin—which sits on the westernmost side of Red Hookwill get a Ferry Landing, the mayor's office announced yesterday.

Although Eerie Basin and Valentino Park were also considered for the new stop, Atlantic Basin was chosen because not only is it far from any residential area (thus, making the increased air pollution less dangerous), but also because it’s completely owned by the city.

The relatively isolated Red Hook could benefit from the the ferry service, assembly member Jo Anne Simon told Curbed, giving over 6,000 residents from the surrounding area, as well as Astoria and the Rockaways, “easy, sustainable access to locations in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan," for as little as $2.75 per trip.

The access would give a much needed boost to local businesses and office properties (such Thor Equities’ 7.7-acre, 623k SF mixed-use project, pictured). It could also give job opportunities to Red Hook residents and the more than 15,000 families expected to fill the city’s NYCHA developments on NYC’s waterfronts.

The harbor itself is expected to provide at least 155 jobs when it opens in 2017. [Curbed]
