Mayor Bill de Blasio, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and New York City Economic Development Corp president Maria Torres-Springer announced the YMCA of Greater New York will construct a 50k SF recreational facility in the Bronx’s Edenwald neighborhood.

Located at 1250 East 229th St, the facility has been pursued by Heastie and Bronx officials for decades, and will include two swimming pools, a wellness center, a full-length basketball court, an indoor track, a gym, a childcare facility, multi-purpose rooms and 200 parking spaces.

There’ll also be programming for various age and income groups, including after-school educational programs, swimming lessons, diabetes prevention programs, civics classes, and personal training and group exercise classes.

The $48M facility is expected to create 101 construction jobs—35% of which must be from minority- and women-owned businesses—and 100 permanent, living-wage jobs when completed in 2020. During the announcement ceremony, Bronx Borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. dedicated $1M of the borough’s budget to the project.

The YMCA will be hiring through NYCEDC’s HireNYC program. It’ll also use its own Financial Assistance Program to make membership and program fees affordable.
