Durst Lands Landmark Theatres At VIA 57 West

Landmark Theatres is taking 30k SF to open an eight-screen movie theater at the Durst Organization’s VIA 57 West, the Bjarke Ingels-designed, pyramidal mixed-use building where 57th Street meets the West Side Highway.

It’s the first new movie theater to open in Midtown in the past 15 years, according to a news release. Tenants at the building’s retail space include The American Kennel Club and Livanos Restaurant Group.

The new theater will host special events and will have a private bar, but it's not clear whether the location will offer dining while viewing, a concept made popular by competitors like Alamo Drafthouse and Nitehawk Cinema.

The theater chain, which is part-owned by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, has recently moved into food service to accompany its theater business. Landmark launched a search for spaces in NYC ranging from 25k SF to 50k SF last summer.

The VIA 57 West complex has a total of 1,370 residential units. David Neil and Ashlea Aaron repped The Durst Organization in-house along with Lee & Associates’ Peter Braus. Landmark Theatres was repped by Lee & Associates Brad Schwarz and JP Sutro.

The new theater is scheduled to be open by spring 2017.
