The 300-key LaGuardia Airport Hotel in East Elmhurst is about to split into a nine-story, 93-key IBIS Styles Hotel and seven-story, 148-key Aloft Hotel.

Property owner Spencer Wong—who acquired the property for $20.5M in February 2014—is leading the transformation, which will be designed by SoHo-based Peter Poon Architects, NY Yimby reports.

Both buildings will feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows, metal panels, transparent glass lobbies and colorful façades—with the IBIS featuring green gradient bands, and the ALOFT boasting a blue and yellow Mondrian pattern.

Peter Poon plans to base the IBIS on the NYC subway system, using colorful signage, “tongue-in-cheek” vignettes, and colorful furniture and accessories to create a happy mood. The Aloft, on the other hand, will be more open and flowing, using natural woods and smooth metal to create an industrial aesthetic.

The architect will also add trees to provide guests with an outdoor experience, as well as as a waterfall and fountain at IBIS’s entrance.

The 49k SF IBIS styles will be managed by Interstate Hotels & Resorts, and will feature a breakfast dining area, a luggage room and bike storage. The 89k SF Aloft hasn’t yet announced its management, nor has it submitted filings. Both hotels are expected to be completed in February 2017. [NYY]
