Deepwater Wind LLC is looking at a long-vacant 72-acre Brooklyn waterfront site to serve as the staging ground for a wind farm project off Long Island’s southern coast.

The city issued a request for proposals to use the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal as an industrial maritime facility in November, and bids are due March 4.

Deepwater is currently building the first offshore wind farm in the US in Rhode Island’s waters and is also looking at projects off the coast of New Jersey and Massachusetts, Bloomberg reports.

Environmentalists are excited about the potential of a New York wind farm, which would lie in a triangular 127-square-mile patch of sea, 11 nautical miles south of the City of Long Beach.

The Sierra Club’s Dan Sherrell told Bloomberg the site represents “one of the best sources of offshore wind in the country,” calling it “the Saudi Arabia of wind.”

To move forward, Deepwater will still need to figure out how to secure a long-term lease from the federal government, and reach a power selling agreement with the city.

The firm has also approached Red Hook Container Terminal and Industry City as possible partners. [Bloomberg]
