S9 Architecture and Bjarke Ingels are bringing beauty to NYC, and the city’s giving them their due.

S9, Boston Properties and Rudin Management’s Dock 72 (pictured) and Bjarke Ingels Group’s 40th Police Precinct are among more than a dozen winners of the NYC Design Commission’s Annual Awards for Excellence in Design.

Bjarke Ingels and Starr Whitehouse’s Bronx project includes the city's first community meeting room within a police facility. The room has a porous façade and artwork, and will hold classes and events.

Dock 72 was praised for its open, flexible environments that encourage communication and cooperation between the startups within its walls (or its massive WeWork space). S9 says the 16-story building’s design started with gridded slab, which was “carved” to create steps down to the water. The grid also has "ant farm"-like tunnels. V-shaped columns keep the building above the floodplain and form entrances at both ends.

The year’s honorees also included Van Name Van Pelt Plaza, SoHo Square’s renovation and the addition to Snug Harbor Cultural Center Music Hall. They were praised not only for their beauty but for their forward-looking focus on technological connectivity, sustainability and wellness.
