Queens-based Silvercup Studios, production site of The Sopranos, 30 Rock and Girls, is opening a third facility, in the South Bronx, to accommodate its growth. The new 120k SF production house will be at 295 Locust Ave in Port Morris, reports The Wall Street Journal. This is good news for Bronx leaders, who hope the move will help them get a bigger piece of New York's film and TV production pie. Each year, the sector brings in about $7.1B, with $400M in tax revenue, and creates 130,000 jobs for New Yorkers. However, the Bronx share of that booming industry is probably less than 5%. Alan and Stuart Suna, who decades ago founded the company with their father, purchased the property from Simone Development Cos for $15M. They plan to drop another $20M to convert it into four production studios. The building features 50-foot ceilings, which allow for two-story sets. The brothers also plan to extend the mezzanine portion of the building and add two floors for production offices. The new facility will be able to handle two TV productions at the same time, supporting about 500 full-time positions total. [WSJ]
