Kaufman Astoria Studios is beefing up its production space by adding two new soundstages. The film studio's new spaces will total roughly 26k SF in response to New York’s ongoing entertainment boom.

New York’s major production studios, which include Kaufman Astoria, Silvercups, Steiner and Broadway Stages, have all struggled to meet demand as the city has become one of the most popular shooting locations in North America, Crain’s reports. That's perhaps unsurprising given the long-standing allure of many NYC locales and their long history in film.

Last year, the entertainment industry accounted for roughly $9B of New York’s economy, up 21%, or $1.5B, since 2011, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group commissioned by the city.

About a half dozen TV shows shoot at Kaufman, and the films Money Monster and How To Be Single were shot there recently. Orange is the New Black will return to shooting at Kaufman this summer.

The two new soundstages will be housed in a single building, which will also feature roughly 45k SF of office space on top of the 26k SF of studio space. Kaufman plans to break ground this fall and wrap up the project within two years. [Crain’s]
