The future is here—on Wednesday Uber began its first real-world test of self-driving cars for the public.
The cars use top-mounted lidar units along with an array of cameras to make their way through city traffic, and up until now they have only been driven with an Uber vehicle operator inside controlling the vehicle, the Wall Street Journal reports. Uber says there will still be a safety officer in the car during the test drives, but now he’s just along for the ride.
The cars are designed to be versatile and can be switched back and forth from self-driving mode to manual driving should a driver be present, but so far they’ve been able to navigate Pittsburgh traffic just fine on their own. [WSJ]
