Insurers To Profit Off Construction Industry’s Growing Drone Dependence

Drones are becoming an increasingly important tool in the construction industry. But new technologies mean new liability risks, and insurance companies are stepping in to capitalize.

There are gaps in coverage for many risks associated with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, from typical construction site risks to cyberattacks and possible invasions of privacy, Law360 reports. And it is not a market to be ignored — a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers report said the construction and infrastructure sectors account for more than $45B of drones' total $127B market value.

Experts said construction companies cannot rely on traditional commercial general liability insurance coverage when it comes to drones. Starr Cos. and New Zealand’s Delta Insurance are the first that have stepped up to offer specific drone coverage.
