Strategic Move: Physical Retailers Use Returns To Fuel Additional Shopping

Stores are gearing up for the annual flock of shoppers returning unwanted gifts, and brick-and-mortar retailers are hoping to use the occasion to make even more sales.

That’s one advantage physical stores have over purely online retailers, and companies are doing everything they can to make the most of it, including bringing spring items out early, the Wall Street Journal reports. And considering the National Retail Federation says about 10% of holiday purchases are returned, a lot of people are about to head into shops.

It’s safe to say many of those people will buy something in the exchange—around one-third of shoppers who go to JC Penney to make a return end up spending an extra $60 while half the people who return items in-store at Kohl’s make an additional purchase, according to each company. [WSJ]
