Amazon Has Ambitious Plans To Enter The Shipping Business

Amazon’s distribution network has grown so large that the king of e-commerce is planning to turn it into a full-blown shipping business, taking on UPS, FedEx and the US Postal Service.

Two dozen former and current Amazon execs told the Wall Street Journal the firm’s real plans go beyond its public statement that increasing delivery capacity is a logical growth of its business. Instead, Amazon harbors ambitions to one day deliver packages for itself and others.

If that dream becomes a reality, Amazon will reap massive benefits—bypassing third-party shippers would save the company an estimated $1.1B annually, not to mention opening up an entire new business operation. [WSJ]
