Last week we asked how much of your US city you see in Berlin, or vice versa, and you answered. Virginia-based Jeremy Fretts, senior project architect at Niles Bolton Associates, tells us Berlin’s many unique quirks are unlike development anywhere else. (Here’s Prenzlauer Garten, an infill project he toured over there, on the left.) But the city's greenspace, density, and height, especially in the former West Berlin, feel a lot like Northwest Washington, DC, he says. Differences in the availability of materials and skilled labor allow Berlin architects to economically build in concrete for small-scale structures, and there seem to be more small-scale developments generally. This is aided by different building codes, which allow more residences/single stairwell than over here, Jeremy tells us.
