If a deal isn't reached this Friday between unions and casinos, five of Atlantic City’s eight casinos could see picket lines in front of them instead of gamblers on July 4th weekend.
Over 6,000 cooks, cleaners and cocktail servers walking off the job and striking is the last thing casino owners want on the busiest weekend of the year. But that’s what they’ll see, says president of Unite Here Local 54 Bob McDevitt, unless casinos raise the pay of their employees, which is often less than $12/hour, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Atlantic City has turned into a battleground for politicians and labor leaders who say businesses have failed to uphold their end of the bargain in the deal that opened the door to casinos. [WSJ]
