Bisnow’s "DEI Data Series" has won another journalism award from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.

The 2022 installment of Bisnow’s signature data series, which has tracked the gender and racial makeup of the C-suites and boards of the largest companies in commercial real estate since 2020, was given an honorable mention in the real estate category for small newsrooms.

“The scope and depth of Bisnow’s data reporting series provides a unique look into the challenges of creating a more diverse real estate industry,” the judges said. “The data initiative stands out for its depth and clarity, and the judges are pleased that Bisnow is continuing to track this issue.”

Bisnow began collecting this information in 2020 and updates it annually. Last year, the team expanded the dataset to include the specific roles that women and people of color occupy, which elucidated that most of the improvement in diversity at the upper echelons of real estate is happening in support roles like marketing and human resources.

As last year’s data indicates, the industry is making progress in changing its makeup and culture, but some advocates worry that economic headwinds will stunt momentum. The series includes a deeper analysis of issues around DEI, like how middle management could derail improvement, diversity fatigue and the difficult roles of chief diversity officers.

Finally, Bisnow hosted a podcast roundtable with CRE leaders who spoke candidly about DEI blowback and overload, hiring quotas and what the threat of recession could mean for the path forward.

The 2022 "DEI Data Series" was reported by Jon Banister, Bianca Barragán, Joseph Gordon, Miriam Hall, Olivia Lueckemeyer and Dees Stribling and edited by Ethan Rothstein.

The initial installment of Bisnow’s "DEI Data Series" won top honors in the 2020 SABEW Best in Business awards for the real estate small newsroom category. The series has also won multiple awards from the National Association of Real Estate Editors.
