Despite being controversial, a proposed hotel and mixed-use project for South LA, known as the Reef, was just approved by the LA Planning Commission.

The Reef would consist of a farmers market, a hotel, two high-rises, restaurants, gardens and more than 1,000 apartments and condos.

It would be built with market-rate units, according to Curbed. However, the planning commission said the developer, PHR LA Mart LLC, would have to earmark 5% of the apartments for families with low incomes.

The commissioners also want the developer to pay $15M to LA for off-site affordable housing.

Some area residents oppose the project because of their concern it may drive up property rates and eventually force them out of the neighborhood.

The proposed development must still be approved by the LA City Council. [Curbed]
