High school graduating classes keep growing across Texas, which means demand for more beds of student housing. But watch out for those sneaky states with declining graduation rates, says Texas State University director of housing and residential living Dr. Rosanne Proite (pictured with Art + Artisan’s Jennifer Seay and Marjorie Flanagan at yesterday’s Bisnow Texas Student Housing Summit in Austin). Many out-of-state universities are setting up admissions offices across Texas and are fiercely competing for our intellectual capital.

Campus Advantage VP Jonathan Bove says he was out of the country long-term and was amazed upon his return at the growth in places like the University of Houston and Sam Houston State. Universities that were not flagship campuses even a few years ago are upping their game in response to increased high school graduations. He says UH is one to watch on the housing front—mandatory on-campus requirements were just voted down, but it’s still becoming more of a residential university.
