WhyHotel, an alternative lodging service, is expanding outside of the East Coast.

First stop, Houston.

WhyHotel, which operates pop-up hotels in newly built, luxury apartment buildings, is launching at Camden Downtown at 1515 Austin St., Downtown Houston. In partnership with Camden Property Trust, the pop-up hotel will feature about 100 units and is scheduled to begin in late 2019 and run through late 2020.

Camden Downtown, a 21-story, 271-unit high-rise, is near the Toyota Center and less than a mile from the George R. Brown Convention Center. On-site amenities include a fitness center, a bar, a dining space and common-area lounges.

"Camden Downtown is perfectly situated in the heart of downtown Houston, so bringing early activation and energy to this project by partnering with WhyHotel is truly exciting," Camden Property Trust Executive Vice President Laurie Baker said in a release. "Visitors to downtown Houston as well as prospective residents of Camden Downtown will have the opportunity to experience our new luxury community firsthand, and a WhyHotel partnership offers Camden a unique amenity for its residents as well as additional income for the property during its lease-up period."

The D.C.-based company launched pop-up hotels in D.C., Baltimore and Virginia in 2018. This year, WhyHotel opened an office in San Francisco and plans to expand into new U.S. markets, supported by its office and executive team expansion.

WhyHotel also recently added a new business venture, Hospitality Living. The division will focus on developing high-rise buildings that offer a flexible combination of multifamily and hospitality units on a permanent basis, and not merely until apartments are fully leased. The company plans to deliver its first Hospitality Living assets in 2022.

"Houston is a top-tier market with a thriving hotel business, tremendous corporate footprint, and robust business travel," WhyHotel CEO and co-founder Jason Fudin said in a release. "This is the perfect location for a WhyHotel pop-up hotel and the Camden Downtown development should benefit from WhyHotel's ability to attract guests that will activate the surrounding dining, entertainment, and retail spaces."
