Springwoods Village developer CDC Houston has announced a slew of changes to its master-planned community in north Houston, including a new name, plans to build thousands of residences and a newly appointed executive to oversee the development.

The master-planned community has been rebranded as City Place, in line with the name of its existing 60-acre CityPlace mixed-use district.

CDC Houston, a subsidiary of Coventry Development Corp., and Arizona-based DMB Development have been working on developing new residential offerings at the community for a year and a half, the company said in a release.

“It became clear the Springwoods Village name is not ideally aligned with the energetic and forward-looking community we’re creating. We realized that ‘CityPlace’, the name we’d already adopted for our mixed-use core, is a far better fit and can be readily expanded to encompass the entire community,” Coventry Development Corp. Robert Asselbergs said in the release.

CDC Houston is partnering with DMB Development to build thousands of new residences, including a mix of single-family and multifamily homes. The first phase of the project, which is scheduled to break ground in 2022, will include about 600 single-family homes. Later phases are expected to contain multifamily developments.

Model homes and an experiential sales center are slated to open in 2023.

“Our goal is to offer something extraordinary for Houstonians seeking a different kind of lifestyle, while addressing the needs of our growing onsite workforce, anticipated to reach 25,000 to 30,000 people in the not-too-distant future,” CDC Houston Executive Vice President Warren Wilson said in a statement.

The 2,000-acre master-planned community in north Houston is home to several major employers, including headquarters for Exxon Mobil Corp. and Southwestern Energy and the forthcoming headquarters for Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Alex Sutton has been hired as general manager of the CDC Houston and DMB joint venture. Prior to the role, Sutton served as co-president of The Woodlands Development Co. and spent a total of 27 years at The Woodlands. Sutton originally retired in late 2020 before placing those plans on hold to join City Place.

Sutton and DMB Development have opened a new office at City Place, located just off the Plaza at 1700 City Plaza Drive, adjacent to CDC Houston’s new office.

Roadworks are also underway at the community. Springwoods Village Parkway is being extended to connect to its interchange with the Grand Parkway. Opening in 2022, the interchange will act as the “front door” to the future residential development.

In addition, Energy Drive is being extended south to a new connection at Interstate 45, with completion planned for late this year.
