Nonprofit Renovates Old Church Into New 'International Church Of Cannabis'

Interior Of The International Church Of Cannabis, Denver

It is one of the more unusual rehab projects in Denver, or anywhere else: Elevation Ministries, a Colorado nonprofit religious organization, has been at work renovating a 113-year-old church building at 400 South Logan St. in the West Washington Park neighborhood since mid-2016 into the International Church of Cannabis, which it plans to open on April 20.

“It’s a great privilege to be able to turn this building around, rather than watching it being converted into condos or left abandoned to attract vagrancy and crime," church spokesman Briley Hale said.

The chapel ceiling has been painted by church artist Okuda San Miguel, and the front of the church has been painted by artist Kenny Scharf.

"Elevation Ministries created the International Church of Cannabis to be a spiritual home to adults who seek to become the best version of themselves by way of the cannabis flower — a sacrament regarded as a gift from the universal creative force," the organization said in a statement.

Church members are called Elevationists and claim no theology. It is not associated with the North Carolina megachurch known as Elevation Church.
