Colorado Economic Development Commission members approved offering as much as $500K in incentives to aid Denver International Airport in securing a nonstop flight to a European city. According to the commission, such a flight would generate an economic impact for the Denver area of $12M annually, the Denver Business Journal reports.
The destination is still secret, but Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade Deputy Director Michelle Hadwiger said Denver is the largest U.S. market without nonstop service to this particular European airport.
During the last three months, DIA has secured a new route to London on Norwegian Air, a direct flight to Panama on Copa Airlines and a nonstop to Zurich on Edelweiss Air, which had never flown into DIA before.
Frontier Airlines said recently that it will add 21 new destinations in the U.S. and Canada from DIA over the next year.
International travel out of DIA has grown 40% during the last four years, making the airport the eighth-fastest growing U.S. airport in that regard, according to Laura Jackson, DIA senior director of air-service development and aviation research.
