The $36M overhaul of the Stage and Ricketson theaters at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has been awarded to Turner Construction Co.

The renovation project has been scheduled around three DCPA Theatre Company seasons, education activities and special events. The team is currently in the design stage.

“Turner Construction has been an outstanding partner to the DCPA for the past three seasons,” DCPA Vice President of Facilities and Event Services Clay Courter said. “The company recently managed the renovation of our Space Theatre on time, under budget and with complete respect for the intricacies of theater scheduling and specialized technical requirements. We could not be in better hands as we embark on the most ambitious project in our facility master plan.”

Key construction dates include:

• April 2019-November 2020: Stage Theatre reconstruction.

• April 2019-September 2021: Support areas (dressing rooms, green rooms, production offices).

• March 2020-April 2021: Ricketson Theatre and lobby area reconstruction.

A capital campaign, entitled A Grander Opening, was launched June 5 to help pay for the project. It is the first public capital campaign in DCPA’s 40-year history. The four-year project will be funded by $19M in general obligation bond funds, $9M through the public fundraising campaign and $8M from donations by the DCPA board of trustees.

The Stage is being renamed the Wolf Theatre in honor of Marvin and Judi Wolf, who have provided the lead donation.

A Grander Opening will enable the DCPA to rebuild its Stage and Ricketson theaters, equipping them with new seating, upgraded accessibility services, enhanced acoustics and improved technology, as well as renovate backstage and support areas, update critical fire and safety systems and connect The Ricketson Theatre to the main lobby, adding an elevator to improve accessibility.
