Boulder-based Sopher Sparn Architects' Washington Village co-housing project has received an award from the Congress of New Urbanism Colorado Charter for “Best Built Project: Community Building.”
Washington Village, a mixed-use co-housing community at 1215 Cedar Ave. in Boulder, incorporates the adaptive reuse of a historic school building at the center of a prominent site in north Boulder. There are seven multifamily buildings and six single-family structures with a total of 36 for-sale units, including 10 permanently affordable residences.
Designed according to LEED-ND criteria, Washington Village has rooftop solar and ground-source heating systems. The project was described by the judges as “an impressive rehabilitation and infill project” that incorporated input from community leaders, neighbors and city officials.
The Broadway Building, the final and most complex building in the development, has 12 units, four of which are permanently affordable. It has many co-housing features, including a community kitchen, common area living room and workout space.
