Preservation Dallas' Most Endangered Historic Places Of 2016

Preservation Dallas released its 2016 list of the city's most endangered historic places. The organization hopes to bring attention to these historic sites and their diverse architectural styles.

Elbow Room at 3010 Gatson Ave

This 2k SF building (pictured) was built in 1933 and has been a dry cleaners, flower shop, café and lounge. Elbow Room has picked up many headlines in the last few months because it sits in the line of fire for the Texas A&M University System's future dental school.

Buildings Along The DART D2 Line

DART's proposed D2 light rail line centers around the urban core and therefore many historic properties. As it stands, the line would impact the Aloft Hotel, SoCo Lofts, Lone Star Gas Lofts, Statler Hilton, Continental Building, First Presbyterian Church, Scottish Rite Temple, Knights of Pythias building and others.

Fair Park Buildings

Fair Park is the nation’s largest collection of Art Deco exposition architecture and public art and was granted National Historic Landmark status in 1986. Preservation Dallas calls for more resources to be used to address maintenance issues such as roof leaks, plumbing and electrical updates, and improved HVAC systems.

Penson House at 3756 Armstrong Ave

This 10k SF home will soon be put up for auction, and a new owner could redevelop the site. Designed by O’Neil Ford and built in 1954, it was home to Jack and Nancy Penson. The Texas Regionalism home is one of Ford’s largest residential projects.

Polar Bear at 1207 North Zang Blvd

Commonly referred to by its longest tenant, Polar Bear Ice Cream, this building opened in the 1930s with the US Sandwich Shop and the Schell Grill. The vacant building is zoned for eight-story mixed-use.

Williams House at 3805 McFarlin Blvd

Designed by architect David Williams in 1932 for University Park mayor Elbert Williams, this 6k SF house sits on just over an acre along Turtle Creek and adjacent to Dallas Country Club's golf course. It will soon go up for auction.
