On Oct. 14, 1916, Union Terminal Co opened Union Station on Houston Street. This week, Union Station celebrated its centennial with a name change and a big party.

This building is a triple threat in historic registries. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and a City of Dallas Historic Landmark.

Costing $6.5M to build in 1916, Union Station originally consolidated five railroads in the Southwest. It's still a transportation hub thanks to DART and TRE. Union Station will also be a hub for the High Speed Rail connecting Dallas to Houston in 90 minutes.

But these days you're more likely to read about Union Station's catering by Wolfgang Puck or see photos of the 48-foot ceilings in the Grand Hall in bridal photographs.

Last week, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (above) received a unanimous vote to rename the building Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station.

The congresswoman, who reps the 30th district of Texas, has sat on transportation, infrastructure, science, technology and space committees.

A walkway connects the station to the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Reunion Tower. The station also has several options for corporate and social events, which has made it particularly popular for weddings.
