Facebook is growing its data center footprint in North Texas with plans to add another 170K SF to its existing Fort Worth Data Center, managers of the data center announced on Facebook Tuesday.

The social media giant says the added space will support its cold storage initiative as part of its global data center infrastructure.

Facebook broke ground on the site in 2015 and at one point employed more than 1,200 construction workers, according to the company. Once the $1.5B data center campus is fully built out, it will expand to a total of 2.6M SF.

The project is the result of Facebook's ongoing discussions with the city of Fort Worth, Tarrant County and leaders associated with AllianceTexas, a major industrial and corporate development strip that stretches through Tarrant and Denton counties.

Facebook has been rapidly expanding its data center footprint across the country. The Fort Worth facility is one of 13 data center sites for the firm in the U.S. DFW is considered a top-tier data center market and is expected to benefit substantially from a wave of data center construction in the next few years.
