Extreme Recyling at Fair Park

After sailing 8,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, then traveling overland on a semi, the history-making 12-ton, 60-foot catamaran that sailed from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia, is reaching its final moorage in Dallas. Plastiki recently came to rest in the Esplanade Fountain at Fair Park. A 350-ton crane lifted Plastiki off a truck before landing it into the fountain, where it will be part of the Urban Innovation Lab for Youth to give underserved kids access to the latest technology and some of the worlds most creative mentors. (Yeah, we know it's not really CRE-related, but it is really cool and it occupies real estate.)

Here, Plastiki crew members are under the hull of vessel, which was made from 12,500 plastic bottles. The whole shebang was made possible by Hunt Consolidated Energy CEO Hunter Hunt and his wife, Stephanie. The unusual catamaran will remain on display until the end of May. Plastiki is one of the focal points of Engineering & Humanity Week and its inventor, builder, and skipper David de Rothschild will do a presentation this Saturday to about 1,000 school children and adults on how Plastiki came about and why it is a symbol of creativity and innovation.
