Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) wants his constituents to consider zoning alternatives at the former A. Finkl & Sons steel plant plant in the Clybourn Corridor. The site is one of the most sought-after properties for Chicago developers but the planned manufacturing district where it rests would need to be amended or repealed in order for zoning changes accommodating the retail, residential and/or mixed-use development that has transformed the Clybourn Corridor the past 20 years. Hopkins told WBEZ the PMD zoning “is almost like a set of handcuffs.” One neighborhood group proposes setting aside 115 acres for residential development, while other residents are concerned more housing or retail will increase congestion in the area.
