Top 100: DLA Piper is Huge

DLA Piper is home to the most real estate attorneys of any firm in the world. Our CFO declined our globe-trotting request to verify that, so we just met with 2 of the 70 plus in the Chicago group.
 

Vice Chair Richard Klawiter and Chair Lou Cohen say traditional transactional deals have slowed, but they've capitalized on their specialties: Rich has been to London five times this year to work on new TIF regulations going all the way to Parliament, and Lou has worked on several professional sports stadium deals. (No word on if Wrigley will keep its name: They don't rep the Cubs). Richard and Lou have worked at the firm for 15 and 26 years respectively.

 

Realizing deals have been tougher, they've created alternative fee structures; you pay less if the deal never happens. Their creative approach helped them secure incentives for United from the City of Chicago in connection with its relocation to Willis Tower.
