| Most metro areas don’t even have one, but Tesla Motors is opening a secondretail location in the Chicago area at Westfield Old Orchard (the first one is at Oakbrook). The company, with cars made to order, has an unusual retail model. Its stores are mostly in high-end malls, and the company wants to engage with consumers when they aren’t thinking about buying a car, Tesla’s Shanna Hendrikstells us. The stores’ mission is to introduce customers to the all-electric cars and persuade them to order—or at least to plant the idea—rather than offer acres of cars on a lot. But it’s still a rarified niche: you can’t order even the most basic Model S for much less than $60k. |
