What's your favorite historic design? Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture's Jim Plunkard loves the landmarked Chicago Athletic Association, 12 S Michigan Ave. (He loves it so much that HPA is working on its adaptive reuse into a boutique hotel managed by Commune Hotel & Resorts, under construction.) Designed by Henry Ives Cobb in 1893 as a gentlemen's club for athletic and social activities, its Venetian Gothic revival architecture (facade modeled after the Doges Palace in Venice) makes it a unique part of the Michigan Avenue Streetwall, Jim says. The interiors are just as detailed: elaborate carved wood paneling, mosaic-tiled floors, and art glass windows.
