| Multifamily and healthcare properties might be headline-hot, but Avison Young is betting on a quietly sizzling sector that most people use every day without realizing it: data centers. Toward that end, Avison Young has recruited a couple of Chicago-based data center specialists. Jim Kerrigan, pictured here on the slopes in Beaver Creek, Colo. this week, tells us that 80% of businesses still host their own datathemselves, which will be an increasingly difficult proposition in the years ahead as the data environment intensifies. So that box of wires and circuits down the hall just isn't going to cut it in the age of the cloud. A data-center guru since the late '90s, Jim's job will be to guide companies neck-deep in data to centers that will meet their needs. | |
| Also joining Avison Young is David Horowitz, the fellow in the gray sweater on the links with a golfing buddy in San Deigo not long ago. David and Jim were colleagues at Staubachback in the day, before a more recent stint at Grubb & Ellis, where they formed the firm's data center group. David's also a data center maven,and says that there's a shortage of that kind of expertise, but increasing demand for it. Looks like the duo is going to have as much work as they can handle in the esoteric world of site-selection for colocation and wholesale data centers, power and fiber analysis, and megawatt leasing deals. | |
