HAIRPIN LOFTS TAKE A TURN

Construction is coming to a close (our camera may have inhaled some paint, thus the blurring) and new tenants are starting to move in to the affordable housing at The Hairpin Lofts, a 50k SF, 28-unit former office building at 2800 N Milwaukee. Brinshore Development started work on the buildings 15 months ago. For 10 years leading up to the renovation, the property stood vacant with mostly plywood windows and dirty marble, not to mention pigeons and 10' debris piles. (Heavenly conditions if you're a stray cat.) But when McShane Construction's Paul Doman  and  Jerry Albom  showed us the nearly finished product yesterday, it had been restored to its original 1932 glory. The tiles in the lobby are original—the camel was the logo of a hairpin manufacturer, a former tenant.

Residential units in the building are nearly 50% leased with Payless Shoes  and Edward Jones  occupying first floor retail space. The Milwaukee Arts Center is taking up the second floor of the pie-slice- shaped building, which gets lots of natural light in corner units like this one. Paul and Jerry said the most unique aspect of the property was that it's landmarked, so each change to the facade, exterior, and common areas had to be checked over by several jurisdictions for approval. McShane is finishing up the lobby and retail build-outs, as well as ensuring they're ready for LEED certification.  Jerry tells us the lofts have gotten a lot of attention from residents in the up-and-coming Logan Square  neighborhood.
