The Commission on Chicago Landmarks last week unanimously approved making the Fulton-Randolph area an official Landmark District. Across the 74-acre area that is now protected, the 142 properties, including 87 "contributing" buildings, 44 "non-contributing" buildings and 11 vacant lots, cannot be demolished or significantly altered. However, opponents feel that this move would make new development in the area more challenging—a particularly pertinent concern due to the fact that Fulton Market has seen much new office activity.
